A plant for the production of liquid urea-ammonia mixture will appear in Mendeleevsk. KazanFirst experts emphasize the prospects of the direction, and the creators of the project note the use of eco-friendly technologies.

In Mendeleevsk, the company “New Fertilizers” is preparing for the construction of a plant for the production of liquid nitrogen fertilizers (urea-ammonia mixture (CAS) at the site of JSC “Ammonium”. Work will begin after receiving all permits in the first quarter of 2023. The implementation of the project will require 496 million rubles of investment.

The press service of “Ammonium” informs that CAS is a liquid mineral fertilizer with nitrogen content in three forms: nitrate, ammonia and amide. They are consistently transformed into each other, providing plants with stable and long-term nutrition with a high nitrogen content, so CAS today is one of the most promising fertilizers with high economic efficiency.

Inga Seregina, Professor of the Department of Agronomic, Biological Chemistry and Radiology of the K.A. Timiryazev Russian State Agricultural Academy, told KazanFirst that CAS with a nitrogen content of 28-32% has a number of advantages over solid and liquid nitrogen fertilizers. According to her, they do not contain free ammonia, therefore they are more technologically advanced and convenient to use; they can be stored in open tanks without nitrogen losses. Carbamide and ammonium nitrate in solutions create the effect of mutual dissolution, which makes it possible to obtain more concentrated fertilizers without the risk of crystallization.

It is planned to produce 150 thousand tons of products per year with a further increase to 300 thousand tons, – informed KazanFirst in “Ammonium”. – “New Fertilizers” will become the only producer of liquid nitrogen fertilizers in the Volga Federal District. There are analogues of similar productions only in Belarus and the Urals. Taking this into account, as well as the fact that the liquid fertilizer market is currently in short supply, the company will primarily focus on agricultural enterprises of Tatarstan. The plans also include deliveries to the nearby regions of the Volga Federal District.

KazanFirst experts note the prospects of the new production. Shamil Ageev, Chairman of the Tatarstan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Union, calls liquid nitrogen fertilizers a very popular product.

The fact that our President Rustam Minnikhanov is practically promoting this construction is very important for the republic. Not only will jobs [appear], [for production] there are raw materials – gas, there is a lot of added value,” he said.

The interlocutor also emphasizes the profitability of production due to reasonable gas prices and high fertilizer prices.

Finam analyst Alexey Kalachev notes liquid fertilizers as one of the fastest growing segments of the domestic market of mineral and chemical fertilizers.

Although the use of liquid fertilizers in Russia has increased significantly in recent years, and the share of the domestic market in manufacturers’ sales has grown from a quarter to about a third, the growth of their use in domestic agriculture still has great potential. Currently, about a quarter of agricultural farms in Russia use liquid fertilizers, but their share in total fertilizer consumption is still only about 15%. So there is room to grow,” he shared his opinion.

According to Kalachev, the organization of production of liquid urea-ammonia mixture in Tatarstan has good prospects in terms of the growth of industrial chemical production in the republic, the creation of qualified jobs, the development of processing of hydrocarbon raw materials and the provision of progressive products that increase the productivity of agricultural farms in Tatarstan and the entire Volga region.

The production plant will be one of the most environmentally friendly in the republic, the plant stressed.

Similar practices are already being applied at the Ammonium plant, the only one in Tatarstan that has successfully tested and implements a system of drainless drainage at an operating enterprise, when all the water used in production undergoes a multi-stage degree of purification and returns back to production. At the same time, there are no drains into the nearby Toima and Kama rivers, the company says.

During the construction of a new plant, the New Fertilizers company will use similar technologies that completely exclude additional emissions into the atmosphere.
